Many people are less familiar with brandy than with whiskey or gin, but the Sidecar is the ultimate gateway to brandy cocktails. It’s essentially a Cognac Sour with orange liqueur, and it’s downright delectable. It was reportedly invented by an American army captain in Paris in World War I who drove around in a motorcycle sidecar. I don’t care if this story is true; I’m obsessed with the idea of a man in uniform drinking a Sidecar in a sidecar.

One time, I had a guy come to the bar and ask for a Hennessy and cranberry. He was dismayed when I told him we didn’t have Hennessy OR cranberry juice. He said he just wanted something refreshing with Cognac, so I made him a Sidecar and he absolutely loved it! Those are my favorite moments behind the bar, introducing someone to their new go-to classic cocktail. I feel like a matchmaker.

I’m not entirely sure why, but after some serious, scientific taste testing, I’ve decided that Cognac is the best brandy to use in a Sidecar. The brand of triple sec you use will greatly affect the drink also (my personal fave to use in this cocktail is Pierre Ferrand dry curaçao). You don’t have to rim the glass with sugar, but since Sidecars can lean on the drier side, I find it helps to balance the cocktail. Plus, who doesn’t love a good sugar rim?
